Nanofiltration Systems

Nanofiltration is a membrane separation process which removes many dissolved high molecular weight compounds from water. Nanofiltration membranes are also called “softening membranes” because they can remove the hardness from feed water but leave the majority of the lower molecular weight ions in the water.  Nanofiltration membranes can also remove large organic molecules with molecular weight above about 1000 Daltons such as color from water.   Nanofiltration has replaced Reverse Osmosis membrane treatment in many applications where removal of just the hardness and large organics  is needed.

Other applications are:
  • Removal of sugar from syrups and juices
  • Removal of hardness from process water.
  • Recycling of process water so that it can be reused instead of being discarded as waste

Applications Of Nanofiltration

  • Lifestream has designed and produced Nanofiltration systems up to 3,000 m3/day (780,000 USG/day). These are unitized systems which are easily put into operation on site in the most difficult of locations. These units can be containerized in customized 20, 40, and 53 foot ISO containers for secure transit and easy startup.

Potable Water and Process Water

  • Purified bacteria and virus free water for applications such as drinking water, wash water and process water.
  • Nanofiltration Membranes allow water, monovalent ions, and prevent the passage of most divalent and multivalent ions passing through, and also stop larger organic molecules.
  • Ultrafiltration produces water free of large molecules and most color bodies.
  • Water softening and decolorization using Nanofiltration reduces the sue of chemical regwnwration materials and reduces waste disposal issues for many processes.

Wastewater Recycling

  • Wastewater recycling and reuse can be accomplished with properly designed NF systems to allow dramatic reduction in waste water disposal costs.
  • Oily Wastewater concentration allows the oily water which needs do be disposed of to be quite concentrated to reduce disposal costs.
